Following a tragic incident at Gokulpuri metro station in Delhi, where a wall collapse resulted in one fatality and injuries to four others, the Delhi government has taken decisive action by instructing the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to establish a committee of experts to investigate the matter.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot expressed deep regret over the incident and emphasized the urgency of the situation. He directed the DMRC to form a committee of experts tasked with investigating the incident thoroughly. The committee has been given a timeline of two weeks to submit its report. Additionally, Minister Gahlot mandated the provision of ex-gratia compensation within 24 hours to the affected families and full support for medical treatment to the injured and their families.
In a notice issued to the DMRC, the government highlighted the severity of the incident and underscored the importance of swift action. The notice instructed the DMRC to ensure prompt investigation, disbursement of compensation as per regulations, and the provision of necessary assistance to the injured individuals.
Responding to the situation, the DMRC announced compensation amounts, offering ₹25 lakh to the family of the deceased, ₹5 lakh for grievously injured victims, and ₹1 lakh for those with minor injuries. Furthermore, the DMRC took disciplinary action by suspending two officials in connection with the incident.
The tragic event claimed the life of 53-year-old Vinod Kumar, a resident of Karawal Nagar, while four others sustained injuries. Additionally, the collapse damaged two bikes and two scooters, further highlighting the severity of the incident and the need for prompt investigation and remedial action.
As investigations continue and efforts to assist affected individuals intensify, both the Delhi government and the DMRC are under pressure to ensure accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
