Kashyap Swaroop, a Mumbai-based comedian, found himself in a predicament when his ex-landlord failed to refund 60% of his security deposit despite promises to do so. Frustrated with the lack of response, Swaroop took to the internet seeking assistance, and his plea for help quickly went viral on social media.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter, Swaroop shared screenshots of his WhatsApp chat with the landlord. The comedian revealed that he was asked to vacate his home before the termination of the lock-in period, and despite leaving the house in excellent condition, the landlord was reluctant to refund a significant portion of the security deposit.
The WhatsApp conversation depicted Swaroop reminding the landlord about the pending refund and issuing a warning of legal action if necessary. In response, the landlord nonchalantly replied, “Pls do what you have to do. Thanks.”
Expressing the common sentiment among tenants, Swaroop wrote in his post, “Landlords are on a massive ego trip. Any help is appreciated.” The post garnered significant attention, accumulating over 7 lakh views and numerous comments offering advice, support, and shared experiences.
One user advised, “Never hand over keys without a full refund,” while another suggested, “You may have vacated/emptied the house. But the possession may still be with you. Go put a lock on the door and send him a message.”
Taking matters into his own hands, Swaroop sought assistance from the Mumbai Police. In an update, he expressed gratitude to the online community, stating, “Thanks to everyone who helped, shared their experiences, and gave me some solace here.”
The comedian detailed the police intervention, explaining, “Went to the cops. They called up the individual in question, asked him to come to the police station to explain his side of the story. He immediately insisted he’d transferred the deposit. My bank statement showed he didn’t. An hour later, I had it.”
Fortunately, the intervention by the Mumbai Police prompted the landlord to fulfill his obligation, and Swaroop successfully retrieved his security deposit. The comedian concluded by acknowledging the broader issues involved in the case, such as the lack of awareness around EVs, unethical CCTV monitoring, and intimidation, but expressed satisfaction with the closure he achieved through the support of the online community and law enforcement.
