In a peculiar incident at the DAV Public School on Sikhanwala Road, Kotkapura, a man was caught attempting to impersonate his girlfriend during a health workers’ recruitment exam conducted by the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS). The accused, identified as Angrez Singh from Ram Saran Colony in Fazilka district, donned women’s attire and presented fake identity cards in a bid to appear on behalf of his girlfriend, Paramjeet.
The bizarre episode unfolded on January 7 when university authorities noticed Angrez Singh, dressed in a salwar kameez with bangles and lipstick, attempting to take the exam on behalf of Paramjeet. The motive, he later revealed to the police, was his girlfriend’s previous failure in the exam, compelling him to impersonate her.
Dr Rajeev Sood, the vice-chancellor of BFUHS, stated, “He was dressed as a woman and had two identity cards, but his appearance and conduct raised suspicion. Following this, the examiners collected his fingerprints for a biometric check. As his fingerprints did not match, we handed him over to the police.”
Angrez Singh, a Bachelor of Arts degree holder currently unemployed, was found with two fake identity cards – a voter card and Aadhaar card. The university promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to his arrest under Section 419-B (cheating by impersonation) of the Indian Penal Code. Despite the charges, he was released on bail the same day.
Gurmehar Singh, the station house officer at Kotkapura police station, revealed that Angrez Singh confessed to his actions, admitting that Paramjeet was his girlfriend. He had created fake IDs by pasting colored photocopies of his pictures on Paramjeet’s documents.
The university authorities have suspended Paramjeet’s exam application, and there are suspicions that Angrez Singh might be part of a larger scam involving recruitment exams. Dr. Sood urged the police to investigate how the impersonator acquired fake IDs, emphasizing the need to scrutinize potential connections to a broader fraudulent scheme.
