The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has made strategic moves ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections by nominating Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW), for a seat in the Upper House. This decision marks Maliwal’s debut in parliamentary affairs and highlights her advocacy for women’s rights, adding depth to AAP’s representation.
AAP’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) reinforced the candidature of Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta for their second terms in the upper house, with their current terms set to expire on January 27, 2024.
Sushil Kumar Gupta, whose tenure in the Rajya Sabha ends this month, will step aside to facilitate Swati Maliwal’s entry. Gupta expressed his intent to focus on electoral politics in Haryana, aligning with AAP’s plans for upcoming elections in the state.
In a recent development, the Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court permitted Sanjay Singh, currently under arrest in connection with a money laundering case related to the alleged Delhi excise scam, to sign forms and documents necessary for his Rajya Sabha renomination. The court directed Tihar Jail authorities to facilitate Singh’s access to sign the required papers and allotted a half-hour meeting with his counsel for further nomination modalities.
AAP presently holds 10 seats in the upper house, including members like Raghav Chadha and former cricketer Harbhajan Singh. The party’s representation surged following their resounding victory in Punjab.
The nomination process for three Rajya Sabha seats from Delhi commenced on January 3, with the polls scheduled for January 19. Given AAP’s overwhelming majority of 62 out of 70 seats in the Delhi assembly, the three AAP nominees are poised for an uncontested election.
This strategic maneuver by AAP reflects their intent to reinforce their representation in the upper house and leverage the expertise and advocacy of individuals like Swati Maliwal while reasserting the candidature of Sanjay Singh and ND Gupta.
