The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a significant weather alert, predicting a wet spell over Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) commencing from Saturday onwards. This weather event is a result of an intense western disturbance (WD) that is anticipated to influence the western Himalayan region between October 13 and 17.
According to IMD, this WD is expected to bring widespread, light to moderate rainfall over Delhi and NCR on October 15 and 16. Following its passage, a gradual decrease in minimum temperatures is foreseen. This intense weather system will also induce the formation of a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and its neighboring regions within the next 24 hours. IMD has issued a special warning indicating the likelihood of the WD intensifying further, possibly merging with a fresh WD around October 15.
“This marks the first intense WD of this season, which will impact northwest and central India from October 13 night to October 17. The system is expected to draw moisture from the Arabian Sea on October 15 and 16, leading to an increase in rainfall intensity and distribution over northwest India during the same period,” stated IMD.
Once the WD has passed, the region can expect dry, colder north-westerly winds originating from the Himalayas in the lower tropospheric levels. This change in weather conditions is anticipated to lead to a gradual temperature drop of 2-4°C from October 17 over northwest India, according to IMD’s warning on the wet spell over the region.
Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Climate and Meteorology at Skymet Weather, explained, “There is likely to be widespread light to moderate rainfall over Delhi, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, isolated pockets of west Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat during the next 3-4 days in association with this intense WD. Some areas may also experience hailstorms.”
Additionally, the monsoon has further withdrawn from several parts of India, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Gangetic West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and North Interior Karnataka.
Over Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, IMD predicts scattered rainfall with isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning on October 15, followed by widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms on October 16.
