Indian Army Continues to Choose Mahindra Scorpio Classic as its Go-To Vehicle

In a recent development, Mahindra & Mahindra has secured yet another significant order from the Indian Army for its popular model, the Scorpio Classic. The Army has placed a request for 1,850 units of the Scorpio Classic, following an earlier order for 1,470 units of the older generation Scorpio in January this year. It appears that the Indian Army has developed a fondness for the Scorpio Classic, which received a comprehensive update last year.

Distinguishing itself from the civilian version available in the market, the Mahindra Scorpio Classic specially tailored for the Indian Army showcases several unique features. The military-spec Scorpio Classic boasts a distinctive green shade, exclusive to vehicles used by the organization. Furthermore, instead of the civilian version’s “Twin Peaks” logo, the military variant proudly bears the older Mahindra logo on its front grille.

While the civilian Scorpio Classic does not offer a 4×4 drivetrain, the Army-specific variant is expected to feature this capability. Equipped with a robust 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, the military version produces an impressive power output of 140 bhp and 320 Nm of torque. In contrast, the engine in the civilian model is detuned, generating 130 bhp and 300 Nm of torque.

Mahindra & Mahindra has a long-standing relationship with the Indian Army, with its defense-related operations managed through its subsidiary, Mahindra Defense Systems (MDS). Alongside the Scorpio Classic, Mahindra has also designed and developed the Armado, an armored light specialist vehicle (ALSV) that recently joined the Army’s fleet. The Armado offers robust ballistic protection up to B7, Stanag Level II standards.

The Indian Army currently utilizes a diverse range of rugged SUVs, including the Maruti Gypsy, Tata Safari Storme, Force Gurkha, and Tata Xenon. However, the Scorpio Classic has evidently emerged as a preferred choice due to its reliability, off-road capabilities, and the customized features that cater specifically to the Army’s requirements.

With this latest order, Mahindra & Mahindra reinforces its commitment to serving the defense needs of the Indian Army. The company’s ongoing collaboration with the military not only showcases its expertise in designing and manufacturing specialized vehicles but also highlights its dedication to supporting national security endeavors.

As the Mahindra Scorpio Classic continues to earn the trust of the Indian Army, it further solidifies its position as a reliable and preferred vehicle for military operations in diverse terrains across the country.
