“Bihar Faces Fifth Bridge Collapse in Nine Days Amidst Infrastructure Concerns”

Date:

In yet another setback to infrastructure development in Bihar, an under-construction bridge collapsed in Madhubani district’s Madhepur Block on Friday, marking the fifth such incident in the state within a span of just nine days.

The 75-meter-long bridge, which had been under construction since 2021 at a cost of ₹3 crore by the Rural Works Department of the Bihar government, succumbed to structural failure as rising water levels caused a 25-meter supporting pillar to collapse into the river below.

Images from the site depict the fallen pillars draped under large tarpaulin sheets, highlighting the scale of the collapse and its impact on ongoing construction efforts.

This incident follows a series of bridge collapses across Bihar, underscoring growing concerns over infrastructure quality and safety in the state. Just a day prior, another bridge crumbled in Kishanganj district, adding to a list of recent collapses including those in East Champaran on June 23, Siwan on June 22, and Araria on June 19.

Tejashwi Yadav, the Opposition leader in the Bihar Assembly, swiftly criticized the government over the latest collapse, emphasizing the need for stringent oversight and accountability in infrastructure projects.

The recurring collapses have raised questions about the monitoring and execution of construction projects across Bihar, with stakeholders demanding thorough investigations into the structural integrity and adherence to safety protocols during the building process.

Authorities have yet to comment on the specific causes leading to these collapses, but public scrutiny and concerns over infrastructure reliability continue to mount as incidents of this nature persist.
