Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren Denied Interim Bail in Land Scam Case

The Special PMLA Court in Ranchi has declined to grant interim bail to former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with a land scam case. Soren had requested a 13-day interim bail to attend his uncle’s funeral, which the court rejected.

Soren’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, has approached the Supreme Court challenging his arrest. They highlighted that the Jharkhand High Court has yet to deliver a judgment on his arrest petition, which was filed in February. Soren’s lawyers urged an urgent hearing due to the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, indicating that the election would conclude before any decision on his bail.

In his plea before the High Court, Soren argued that his arrest was unjustified and that his detention was arbitrary and unlawful. He also sought interim bail during the legal proceedings.

The arrest of Hemant Soren, the former Chief Minister and current Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) Chairperson, stemmed from investigations into a land scam. Authorities are probing significant sums of illicit proceeds linked to fraudulent land transactions, allegedly involving falsified documents and fictitious parties to acquire valuable land parcels worth crores of rupees.
