Severe Heatwave Grips Odisha, Bhubaneswar Scorches at 43.6°C - IMD Issues Alert

Odisha is facing an intense heatwave as Bhubaneswar records its highest temperature of the season, reaching a scorching 43.6 degrees Celsius. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alert for the state, warning of extreme conditions in the coming days.

In a statement posted on X, the IMD stated, “Severe heatwave conditions are likely at isolated places over Odisha during 18-19 April and heatwave conditions on 20-21 April, 2024.” This alert has raised concerns across the region, prompting authorities to take precautionary measures.

Speaking to news agency ANI, Manorama Mohanty, Director of IMD Bhubaneswar, highlighted the severity of the situation. Bhubaneswar, along with cities like Boudh and Angul, has witnessed temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius, signaling a significant heatwave impact.

“The state has recorded the highest temperature in Bhubaneswar at 43.6 degrees Celsius. Bhubaneswar, Boudh, and Angul witnessed temperatures over 43 degrees Celsius,” Mohanty mentioned, emphasizing the widespread nature of the heatwave.

Mohanty also provided insights into the expected weather conditions, stating, “On April 19, severe heatwave conditions will prevail, while coastal areas will witness hot and humid conditions. There are even chances of warm nights. The heatwave will continue on April 20 and 21.”

Amid rising concerns, a Yellow alert has been issued for several districts including Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Nayagarh, and Kandhamal. This alert advises people to stay updated and warns of persisting heatwave conditions at isolated pockets for two days.

The impact of the heatwave has also led to significant disruptions, with the Odisha government announcing the closure of all schools in the state from April 18 to 20. This decision aligns with the IMD’s forecast of continued extreme heat.

An ‘yellow alert’ signifies that while the heat is tolerable for the general public, there may be moderate health concerns for vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. The alert underscores the importance of staying hydrated, avoiding direct sun exposure, and taking necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of the heatwave.

As the region braces for challenging weather conditions, authorities and citizens alike are urged to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to ensure safety and well-being during this intense heatwave period.
