High Court Raps Bengal Government Over Sandeshkhali Allegations

The High Court of West Bengal delivered a scathing reprimand to the state government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the Sandeshkhali case. The court, hearing affidavits alleging extortion, land grab, and sexual assault, criticized the Trinamool Congress for potentially shielding Sheikh Shahjahan, a key accused in the case.

Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam expressed deep concern, stating, “Even if one affidavit is correct, it is shameful. Even if one per cent is true it is absolutely shameful.” He emphasized the moral responsibility of the district administration and ruling party in addressing these serious allegations.

The court also criticized Sheikh Shahjahan’s lawyer for his delayed arrest, highlighting the need for accountability and a fair investigation. Earlier, the court had expressed dissatisfaction with the Bengal Police’s handling of the case and called for a thorough investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The focus of the hearing was on providing a platform for the women of Sandeshkhali to voice their complaints without fear of reprisal. BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal, representing the petitioners, advocated for a commission or a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) intervention to address the grievances of the victims.

Ms. Tibrewal highlighted the challenges faced by women in filing complaints and shared concerning incidents, including allegations of rape and land grabbing. Her strong arguments resonated with the court’s stance on upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights.

Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate has taken action by attaching assets worth Rs12.78 crore in connection with the Sheikh Shahjahan case. The Sandeshkhali issue has become a focal point of political debate, with allegations of shielding perpetrators and counter-accusations from both the ruling party and the opposition.
