In a significant development, the Supreme Court collegium, led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, has recommended the transfer of three high court judges in response to their respective requests. The decision, aimed at ensuring the efficient administration of justice, reflects the collegium’s commitment to addressing the personal and professional needs of judicial officers across the country.
During a meeting convened on Tuesday, the collegium, comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant, and Aniruddha Bose, deliberated on the transfer requests received from the judges and subsequently reached a consensus.
Firstly, the collegium accepted the plea of Calcutta High Court judge Justice Moushumi Bhattacharya, who sought a transfer to another high court due to personal reasons. In response to her request, the collegium recommended her transfer to the High Court for the State of Telangana, emphasizing the paramount importance of maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the judiciary.
Secondly, Justice Anu Sivaraman, expressing a desire to be transferred from the State of Kerala, received approval from the collegium. With a view to facilitating the smooth functioning of the legal system, the collegium proposed her transfer to the Karnataka High Court, underscoring its commitment to optimizing judicial resources and expertise.
Lastly, the collegium addressed the request of Justice Sujoy Paul, who cited familial considerations as the basis for seeking a transfer. Given his son’s practice in the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, the collegium resolved to recommend Justice Paul’s transfer to the High Court for the State of Telangana, in alignment with the overarching goal of enhancing judicial efficacy and fairness.
These decisions, reflective of the collegium’s proactive approach towards judicial administration, are expected to streamline the allocation of judicial responsibilities and enhance the accessibility of justice across different regions. The collegium’s adherence to due process and thoughtful consideration of individual circumstances underscore its commitment to upholding the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.
The resolutions pertaining to the transfers of these esteemed judges have been uploaded on the Supreme Court’s official website, reaffirming the collegium’s transparency and accountability in its decision-making process. As these recommendations await final approval from the Centre, they herald a new chapter in the judicial journey of the esteemed judges involved, promising fresh opportunities for professional growth and service to the cause of justice.
