Delhi residents and commuters are bracing for significant traffic disruptions in central parts of the city on Monday and Tuesday due to an event organized at Vijay Chowk to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend the event, titled “Meri Mati Mera Desh — Amrit Kalash Yatra,” which will necessitate traffic restrictions and diversions from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The Delhi Traffic Police has issued a detailed advisory identifying several key intersections and roundabouts that will be affected, including Patel Chowk, Shanti Path, Aurobindo Chowk, Mandi House, Ashoka Road, Rajaji Marg, and Janpath. In light of these restrictions, commuters are strongly advised to use these routes only if absolutely necessary.
The Delhi Traffic Police also anticipates heavy rush on the Delhi Metro routes, particularly on the Yellow and Violet lines. Several metro stations, including Sultanpur, Ghitorni, Qutub Minar, Central Secretariat, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, IFFCO Chowk, Arjan Garh, and Udyog Bhawan, are expected to experience a surge in footfall.
In the advisory, the police have urged commuters to opt for public transport to alleviate congestion on the roads and discourage roadside parking. Furthermore, those heading to various prominent locations in central Delhi, such as Vayu Bhawan, Sena Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Nirman Bhawan, Parliament House, South Block, North Block, Central Secretariat, Rashtrapati Bhawan, and India Gate, are advised to factor in possible delays and depart with ample time to reach their destinations.
The “Meri Mati Mera Desh” campaign, initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his 103rd edition of Mann Ki Baat, is a tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the nation. It involves inscriptions to be installed in village panchayats and the “Amrit Kalash Yatra,” carrying soil from across the country, which will culminate in Delhi. This initiative aims to honor the nation’s history and promote unity.
While the estimated attendance for the event is around 50,000-60,000 people, the actual numbers are expected to be higher on the second day. Delhi traffic arrangements are being managed by an extensive team of law enforcement officials to ensure the event’s smooth execution.
However, some commuters have expressed their frustration with a lack of prior notification, emphasizing the importance of sharing traffic advisories in a more timely manner. This unforeseen traffic situation is expected to impact officegoers in central Delhi, including the bustling Connaught Place area, known for its offices and eateries.
