"Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh Criticizes New Parliament Building as 'Modi Multiplex'; BJP Responds"

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh’s criticism of the new parliament building as a “Modi multiplex” has sparked a political war of words with BJP chief JP Nadda. Ramesh expressed dissatisfaction with the new parliament’s design, calling it inconvenient and lacking the cozy atmosphere of the old building. He claimed that quick coordination between the two Houses had become cumbersome in the new complex. Nadda responded by accusing Congress of having a “pathetic mindset” and insulting the aspirations of the Indian people. The verbal exchange highlights the ongoing political tensions between the two major parties in India.

The new parliament building, where a special session recently took place, has become a point of contention in Indian politics. Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took to social media to voice his displeasure, referring to it as ‘Modi Multiplex’ or ‘Modi Marriot.’ He lamented the loss of meaningful conversations and interactions, both inside the Houses and in the corridors. Ramesh criticized the building’s design, stating that the halls were not cozy or compact, making it necessary to use binoculars to see one another.

Ramesh contrasted the new building with the old parliament, highlighting the ease of movement between the Houses, Central Hall, and corridors in the former. He argued that the new design weakened the necessary bonding for the efficient functioning of Parliament. He described the new building as claustrophobic compared to the old one, which offered a sense of space and openness.

According to Ramesh, the new complex lacked the “sheer joy” of hanging out, and he labeled it “painful and agonizing.” He also cited concerns from Secretariat staff about the building’s functionality, claiming that no consultations were conducted with those who would use it. Ramesh hinted that the building might find a better purpose after a regime change in 2024.

In response to Ramesh’s critique, BJP President JP Nadda accused Congress of having a “pathetic mindset” and insulting the aspirations of 140 crore Indians (1.4 billion). Nadda also pointed out that this was not the first time Congress had displayed anti-Parliament sentiments, referring to the period of Emergency in 1975.

The exchange between the two party leaders underscores the ongoing political rivalry and ideological differences between the Congress Party and the BJP in India. The debate over the new parliament building’s design has become a symbolic battleground for these political tensions.
