"Violence Erupts in Manipur as Protesters Clash with Police; Many Injured"

In a distressing turn of events, violence has resurfaced in Manipur, particularly in the state capital, Imphal, as protesters clashed with police in multiple locations. The confrontations escalated to the point where authorities had to resort to using batons and tear gas, resulting in numerous injuries.

The recent surge in violence can be traced back to the arrest of five men on September 16. These individuals were apprehended while wearing security forces’ uniforms and carrying sophisticated weapons. The arrests triggered widespread protests and demonstrations throughout the Manipur valley region.

In a bid to secure the unconditional release of the detained men, local residents enforced a 48-hour lockdown in the valley, beginning on Tuesday, following an unofficial strike on Monday. Today, women demonstrators marched to police stations across five valley districts, demanding the immediate release of the detainees. They also threatened to be arrested if their demands were not met.

The confrontations between angry protesters and law enforcement agencies erupted at various locations. Eventually, police resorted to using batons and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Numerous individuals are reported to have sustained injuries during these incidents.

One particularly contentious clash occurred outside the Sinjamei police station, where police deployed tear gas shells. This confrontation resulted in three people being injured and subsequently admitted to the hospital.

Given the rapidly evolving and volatile situation, the state administration has revoked curfew relaxation orders and reinstated prohibitory orders that ban large gatherings. Manipur has been grappling with ethnic violence since early May, with over 150 casualties reported during this period.
