“Mumbai Bids Farewell to Iconic Double-Decker Buses After Eight Decades of Service”

Date:

End Of An Era: Mumbai's Double-Decker Buses Make Their Last Ride Today

Mumbai’s iconic double-decker buses, a beloved part of the city’s transportation heritage for over eight decades, are bidding farewell to the bustling streets. The last service of these charming non-AC double-decker buses departed from Marol Depot on a nostalgic Friday morning. These open-roofed double-decker buses, which have been a symbol of Mumbai since the early 1900s, will also be officially withdrawn from service starting October 5.

Currently, only seven double-decker buses, including three open-deck models, remain in the BEST (Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport) fleet. Due to these vehicles reaching the end of their codal life after 15 years, the beloved double-decker buses will forever disappear from Mumbai’s roads starting September 15, while the open-deck buses will follow suit on October 5, according to a BEST spokesperson.

The news of their discontinuation has sparked nostalgia and sadness among Mumbaikars, many of whom have cherished memories of these iconic red buses. On social media platforms, including X (formerly Twitter), people expressed their affection for these buses and shared their recollections.

One user wrote, “Spent my college life commuting in double-decker buses whenever the route allowed. To get the front seat on the upper level was the best. Especially in the monsoon.”

Another person expressed, “My last ride today on Mumbai’s iconic and favorite vehicle – the Red double-decker BEST bus. I have fond memories of traveling on this bus during my childhood days, especially on the top deck window seat. Bye Bye Double-decker BEST bus.”

Introduced in 1937, the red double-decker buses quickly became synonymous with Mumbai’s identity and found their way into numerous movies and songs. At its peak, there were approximately 900 of these buses in the BEST fleet. However, their numbers have steadily declined since the mid-1990s. In 2008, BEST ceased introducing new double-decker buses, citing operational and maintenance challenges.

BEST had already started replacing these iconic buses with leased battery-run red and black double-decker buses earlier this year. To continue offering tourists a unique sightseeing experience, BEST plans to procure new open-deck buses. In the meantime, tourists can enjoy Mumbai’s charm from the new battery-run double-decker e-buses.

As these beloved double-decker buses take their final bow, they leave behind a trail of cherished memories and a lasting legacy in the hearts of Mumbaikars and visitors alike.
