Telangana Revenue Minister P Srinivas Reddy announced on Wednesday that the ongoing search operations at the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel, where six individuals remain trapped, are expected to be completed within 15 days.
The tragic incident occurred on February 22 when a section of the tunnel collapsed, trapping eight people, including engineers and laborers. So far, only two bodies have been recovered from the debris. The search and rescue efforts involve personnel from state, central, and private agencies.
700 Experts Involved in Search Operations
Speaking to the media at the site, Minister Reddy stated that approximately 700-800 experts have been working tirelessly over the past 40 days. Currently, around 550-560 personnel are engaged in the search using advanced equipment.
“The ongoing search operations at the SLBC tunnel will be completed in 15 days. Another 105 to 110 meters of excavation is required to resolve the issue,” he said.
Challenges in Excavation Work
The minister highlighted that the presence of iron and other heavy objects in the tunnel has made excavation difficult and dangerous. The government has taken steps to ensure the safety of those involved in the rescue mission.
To aid in the operations, the soil inside the tunnel is being removed using conveyor belts by the Army and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Monitoring and Protection Agency. The South Central Railway is assisting in cutting and transporting steel rods and other debris with the help of loco trains.
Additionally, cadaver dogs from Kerala have been deployed to detect any traces of the trapped individuals.
