The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for Telangana and Andhra Pradesh as heavy rains continue to impact the region, causing severe flooding and damage. The IMD has placed Telangana’s Jayashankar Bhupalapalle, Komaram Bheem, Mancherial, and Mulugu districts under a “yellow alert” for heavy rainfall on September 4. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh’s NTR and Krishna districts are under an orange alert, signaling the potential for significant rain and flooding.
In response to the severe weather, the Andhra Pradesh government has declared a holiday for schools and colleges in the NTR district on September 4. The IMD has also reported a cyclonic circulation over coastal Andhra Pradesh and neighboring regions and anticipates the formation of a new low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal around September 5.
The ongoing heavy rains have had a devastating impact across both states. Reports indicate that the flooding has resulted in the deaths of 35 people, extensive road damage, submerged rail tracks, and flooded crops. In response to the crisis, state governments are ramping up rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy have visited affected areas to assess the damage and oversee relief operations.
Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has informed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah have assured Telangana’s Chief Minister Revanth Reddy of all necessary assistance. The Indian Air Force has been active in providing relief in Andhra Pradesh’s Vijayawada district, deploying helicopters to distribute supplies and evacuate stranded individuals. Meanwhile, the South Central Railway is working to restore services affected by the floods.
In response to the crisis, Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has allocated ₹30 lakh from his discretionary funds to the Indian Red Cross Society’s Telangana branch for immediate relief efforts. Telangana government employees have collectively contributed ₹130 crore to flood relief, and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the families of flood victims.
