Heavy rainfall has lashed several parts of Gujarat, including Surat, Amreli, and Valsad, causing severe waterlogging and disruption. Videos shared by ANI from major cities depicted streets flooded with water, causing significant inconvenience to residents.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for very heavy rain across the Gujarat region for the next five days. IMD Scientist Pradeep Sharma, as reported by ANI, stated, “There will be rains in all parts of Gujarat in the next 5 days… A warning for very heavy rain is issued for the Gujarat Region… Orange alert has been issued for Bharuch, Surat, Navsari, Valsad, and Dadra Nagar Haveli.” The heavy rainfall is attributed to cyclonic activity off the coast, which is expected to continue affecting districts in Southern Gujarat, while light to moderate rains are forecasted for the rest of the state.
In Surat, visuals showed people navigating knee-deep water. Palsana in Surat recorded 5.2 inches of rain, while Surat city saw 3.6 inches of rainfall, according to a report by Dainik Jagran. Additionally, over 2 inches of rain were recorded in 11 talukas.
The IMD reported that very heavy rains would persist for the next five days in areas including Surat, Valsad, Dang, Tapi, parts of Amreli, Navsari, Daman, and Dadra Nagar Haveli. Dainik Jagran reported that 134 talukas in Gujarat have experienced heavy rainfall in the last six hours.
Amid the heavy rains on Saturday, the canopy at Rajkot airport suffered damage and collapsed in the passenger pickup area near the terminal. Although no fatalities or injuries occurred, this incident marked the third such occurrence at an airport in the past week, following similar incidents in Delhi and Jabalpur.
