Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a series of meetings on Sunday to address the escalating heat wave conditions and the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which has caused significant damage in various states. These meetings involved discussions with key officials from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), India Meteorological Department (IMD), and other relevant government bodies.
The meetings focused on reviewing the preparedness measures and actions taken to mitigate the impact of the ongoing heat wave and the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. The PM received briefings on the relief work being carried out post-cyclone, particularly in the northeastern regions, Bengal, and Odisha, where the cyclone had a severe impact.
The PMO shared that Prime Minister Modi assured full government support to states affected by Cyclone Remal, instructing the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to monitor the situation closely and provide necessary assistance for restoration efforts. The loss of lives and damage to properties in states like Mizoram, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura due to landslides and floods were also discussed.
The deployment of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and their operations for rescue, evacuation, and relief efforts were highlighted. The MHA has been coordinating with state governments to ensure seamless relief operations.
Additionally, the meetings addressed the concerning heat wave conditions across parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, where temperatures have soared close to 50 degrees Celsius. The PM emphasized the need for regular drills to prevent and handle fire incidents, especially in hospitals and public places.
Regarding forest fire management, officials briefed the PM about the effectiveness of the “van agni” portal for timely identification and management of forest fires.
In response to the calamities caused by Cyclone Remal, the PM announced ex-gratia payments from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of deceased and injured individuals. Furthermore, discussions also touched upon seeking financial aid for recovery efforts, with a request from Mizoram for Rs. 1000 crore in special assistance from the central government.
The meetings, held ahead of the Lok Sabha poll results, underscored the government’s proactive approach towards disaster management and climate-related challenges, emphasizing the importance of preparedness, relief operations, and ongoing monitoring of weather conditions and relief efforts.
