In a tragic incident in Mumbai, a 25-year-old motorcyclist was killed after being hit by an electric bus on Saturday night, just days after a deadly bus accident in Kurla claimed seven lives. The victim, identified as Dikshit Vinod Rajput, was severely injured in the accident that occurred at the Shivaji Nagar junction in Govandi.
According to police reports, Rajput was riding his motorcycle when he was struck by the electric bus. The impact caused him to suffer a fatal head injury. He was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The bus, operated by the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking, was leased on a temporary basis.
Police have arrested the driver, 39-year-old Vinod Aabaji Rankhambe, and the conductor, 28-year-old Avinash Vikramrao Gite, in connection with Rajput’s death. Both have been charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) Act. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
This fatal accident occurred just days after a horrific incident in Kurla, where a BEST bus plowed into multiple vehicles, resulting in the deaths of seven people and injuries to 42 others. The bus, which lost control along SG Barve Marg, collided with up to 40 vehicles before smashing into the wall of the Solomon Building.
The driver of the Kurla bus, 54-year-old Sanjay More, was arrested after the incident. More reportedly told police that he was unfamiliar with the automatic transmission of the electric bus and had only received minimal training. Authorities later confirmed there were no technical faults with the bus, but the training given to More was insufficient, having only undergone three rounds of training instead of the mandated six weeks.
The incident in Kurla has raised serious concerns about the safety protocols and training of drivers handling electric buses, prompting further investigation and scrutiny. As Mumbai grapples with the aftermath of these deadly accidents, questions remain about the readiness of transport services and the measures needed to prevent such incidents in the future.
The police have vowed to continue their investigation and ensure justice for the victims of both accidents.
