In a significant move to regulate social media and promote state initiatives, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024. The new policy outlines financial incentives for social media influencers and stringent penalties for objectionable content.
Incentives for Influencers
Under the new policy, social media influencers will have the opportunity to earn substantial revenue by promoting government schemes and achievements. Influencers will be categorized based on their number of followers and subscribers, with payment amounts varying accordingly.
- Influencers on platforms like X, Facebook, and Instagram can earn up to ₹5 lakh, ₹4 lakh, ₹3 lakh, and ₹2 lakh depending on their category.
- Those creating content for YouTube, including videos, shorts, and podcasts, can earn up to ₹8 lakh, ₹7 lakh, ₹6 lakh, and ₹4 lakh per month, based on their reach and engagement.
Sanjay Prasad, Principal Secretary of the Information Department, emphasized that the government will compile a list of influencers, agencies, and firms eligible for state advertisements. These advertisements will focus on promoting various schemes and accomplishments of the Uttar Pradesh government.
Content Regulation and Penalties
The policy also includes comprehensive guidelines for regulating social media content. It aims to address and manage objectionable material across digital platforms. Notably, the policy introduces severe penalties for anti-national content, which is classified as a serious offence. Offenders could face imprisonment ranging from three years to life, depending on the severity of the content.
Additionally, the policy sets out penalties for defamatory and obscene content, reinforcing the government’s commitment to maintaining decorum and legality in the digital space.
The Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to harness the power of social media for promoting governance while ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
