In a somber yet resolute address to the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed deep concern over the recent surge in violence in Manipur, which has claimed the lives of 152 people since May 3. Shah condemned the incidents as shameful for society, while also criticizing the politicization of the situation.
During a discussion on a no-confidence motion, Shah acknowledged the excessive violence in Manipur and revealed his own pain over the unfolding tragedy. He asserted, “Such incidents have happened there that we should be ashamed as a society. However, while the incidents are shameful, doing politics on it is even more shameful.”
Shah also took aim at opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for his handling of the situation. He accused Gandhi of engaging in drama during his visit to Manipur, particularly highlighting an incident where Gandhi insisted on traveling by road instead of using a helicopter for a safer journey. Shah remarked, “Rahul Gandhi staged a drama for three hours. He should have taken a chopper earlier.”
The Home Minister did not shy away from addressing the disturbing video that surfaced, depicting two women being paraded naked during the violence in the B Phainom village of Kangpokpi district on May 4. Shah termed the incident a “blot on society,” expressing regret that the video was not promptly reported to the authorities. He assured the public that the individuals responsible for the horrific act had been identified and apprehended.
Shah also extended his support to Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh, noting that the state government was cooperating effectively with the Centre. “A state CM needs to be changed when he is not cooperating. This CM is operating with the Centre,” Shah emphasized.
While acknowledging the grim statistics of lives lost to the violence, Shah highlighted a gradual reduction in incidents over the past months. He called upon the Meitei and Kuki communities to engage in dialogue and renounce violence as a means of resolution. “Violence is not a solution to any problem,” he urged.
In conclusion, Shah asserted his commitment to restoring peace in Manipur and called for an end to political maneuvering around the issue. “I appeal to both Meitei and Kuki communities to engage in dialogue. Politics should not be done on this issue,” he stressed.
As Manipur continues to grapple with the aftermath of tragic incidents, Amit Shah’s impassioned plea for peace and unity resonates as a call to action, urging all stakeholders to prioritize the well-being and harmony of the region.
