The Trump administration is taking significant steps to further strengthen its relationship with India, according to top sources. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who attended the inauguration ceremony of U.S. President Donald Trump as a special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, held key meetings with American officials to discuss a broad spectrum of bilateral ties.
Following the inauguration, Jaishankar, accompanied by top Indian officials, met National Security Advisor Mike Waltz and attended the first QUAD (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue) meeting with newly appointed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi. The QUAD meeting, held shortly after Jaishankar’s arrival, was a significant platform for India to engage with the U.S. and its allies on issues of mutual concern, including regional security in the Indo-Pacific.
Sources indicate that the U.S. administration has prioritized cementing ties with India in strategic areas such as defense, trade, technology, and economic cooperation. The Trump administration is keen to send a strong message in the Indo-Pacific region through the QUAD, emphasizing freedom of navigation and the creation of resilient global supply chains. Rubio, during the QUAD meeting, underscored that President Trump was fully committed to advancing these goals and ensuring quick responses to humanitarian and natural disasters in the region.
The focus of these high-level discussions was clear: both countries are committed to advancing their relationship based on mutual interests and shared security priorities. Jaishankar’s interactions with U.S. counterparts were described as highly positive, signaling a promising future for Indo-U.S. relations.
Further strengthening these ties, the Trump administration is expected to carry forward the India-U.S. momentum established during the previous administration. Notably, President Trump’s leadership in initiating the QUAD foreign ministers’ dialogue in 2017 was highlighted, and Secretary Rubio emphasized the strategic importance of the grouping in the ongoing discussions.
With a broad agenda encompassing technology, defense, trade, and economic cooperation, the India-U.S. relationship looks set to enter a new phase of deeper collaboration under the Trump administration.
