Ranveer Allahbadia Supreme Court Hearing Sparks Controversy Over Nupur Sharma Reference

The Supreme Court hearing on podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia’s controversial remarks took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when advocate Abhinav Chandrachud referenced former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma’s case. His comparison has triggered heated debates online, with social media users criticizing what they call a “false equivalence.”

Mr. Chandrachud, arguing for Allahbadia’s protection, cited legal precedents, including Sharma’s case, stating, “In the Nupur case there were threats, and the remarks were worse.” He was referring to Sharma’s 2022 plea, where she sought clubbing of multiple FIRs against her to avoid traveling across states for hearings. Allahbadia has now made a similar plea.

Death Threats and Legal Protection

During the hearing, Chandrachud highlighted the severity of threats against Allahbadia, including death warnings and a ₹5 lakh bounty. “‘Ranveer Allahbadia ki zubaan kaatkar laane wale ko milega ₹5 lakh ka inaam’ (Whoever cuts off Ranveer Allahbadia’s tongue will receive ₹5 lakh),” he quoted from an alleged threat.

The Supreme Court took note of these threats, granting temporary protection from arrest and blocking further FIRs against the YouTuber. “We have a judicial system… the law will take its course. The State will provide necessary protection,” the bench assured.

Online Backlash Over Nupur Sharma Comparison

Chandrachud’s reference to Sharma’s case sparked outrage on X (formerly Twitter). Many users accused him of making an unfair comparison, with some arguing that Sharma continues to require security while Allahbadia would likely resume his career soon.

  • “This false equivalence to get bail for Ranveer Allahbadia is condemnable. Nupur still can’t go out without security,” a user wrote.
  • Another questioned his legal argument, saying, “No way! No comparison! Junior Chandrachud is getting wrong training. Such statements are only to create confusion and diversion.”
  • A third accused him of nepotism, pointing out that Chandrachud is the son of former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud.

Court’s Rebuke to Allahbadia

During the hearing, the Supreme Court also took a stern view of Allahbadia’s remarks. Justice Kant criticized him, stating, “What embarrassment he has caused to his parents? We know from where he has copied the question.”
