A jetting machine truck used for cleaning drainage lines, belonging to the Pune Municipal Corporation, fell into a sinkhole on Friday afternoon near the City Post Office in Budhwar Peth. Fortunately, the driver escaped unharmed, according to officials from the fire brigade.
The incident occurred at around 4 pm in the densely populated area, causing a stir among locals. Video footage captured the moment when the large truck began sinking dramatically into the sinkhole. The rear of the vehicle slid into the pit as the surface, made of interlocking cement blocks, collapsed beneath it.
In a narrow escape, the driver was assisted by a local who rushed to the scene and helped him exit the vehicle just before it was fully consumed by the sinkhole.
This incident mirrors other recent sinkhole-related accidents globally. Just last week, in Malaysia, a 48-year-old Indian tourist, Vijaya Lakshmi Gali, tragically fell into a sinkhole on Jalan Masjid in Kuala Lumpur. Gali was walking on a pavement when it suddenly gave way, causing her to plummet 26 feet into an 8-meter-deep hole. Despite search operations, her body was not recovered, and efforts were called off due to safety concerns after nine days.
In a separate incident in Seoul, South Korea, a sinkhole unexpectedly opened up in August, engulfing a car and injuring two elderly occupants. The Korea Herald reported that the white SUV “rolled over sideways” as it crashed into the sinkhole in the Seodaemun district. The passengers, a woman in her 70s and a man in his 80s, were hospitalized following the accident.
