New Covid Variant "Eris" Detected in Maharashtra: Experts Weigh In on Concerns and Precautions

The emergence of a new Covid variant known as “Eris” or EG.5.1 has raised concerns in Maharashtra, India. This variant, which has contributed to an increase in Covid cases in the UK, is causing a slight rise in the caseload in the state. While experts urge caution, they also emphasize the importance of maintaining Covid-appropriate behavior and taking necessary precautions.

Initially detected in the United Kingdom, the Eris variant has prompted health authorities to closely monitor its impact. State health department data indicates a rise in Covid cases in Maharashtra, suggesting a potential connection to the new variant. Cases increased from 70 at the end of July to 115 on August 6.

Medical professionals stress the need for vigilance and adherence to safety measures. Dr. Ravi Shekhar Jha, Director & HOD-Pulmonology at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, highlights the importance of Covid-appropriate behavior, especially since vaccination immunity might be waning. He emphasizes that unforeseen surges can be disastrous if the necessary precautions are not maintained.

Dr. Kuldeep Kumar Grover, Head of Critical Care & Pulmonology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon, notes that while cases have been reported in Mumbai, the positivity rate and upsurge in cases have not been alarming so far. He suggests that the new strain may not be a significant concern for India if the current trend continues.

Symptoms of the Eris variant mirror those of previous variants, including cough, cold, fever, throat pain, and chest tightness. In immunocompromised individuals, the variant can lead to fatal Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). Additionally, Eris appears to be more contagious than previous variants.

Dr. Grover adds that while Eris may cause mild Covid symptoms, its rapid spread characterizes it as more infectious and less visible. However, due to widespread vaccination efforts, infection spread rates are expected to be minimal, potentially leading to fewer hospitalizations.

Experts recommend maintaining a balanced diet, hygienic lifestyle, regular vaccination, and adherence to Covid-appropriate behavior, including wearing masks and avoiding crowded places. They also stress the importance of proper sanitization.

While the current rise in cases in Maharashtra is not a significant concern, experts advise vigilance to monitor potential spikes and to differentiate Covid symptoms from those of other illnesses, particularly during the flu season.

In conclusion, experts underscore the need for a proactive approach to safeguard against the potential impact of the Eris variant. While the situation is being closely monitored, a combination of preventive measures, responsible behavior, and timely booster shots can play a pivotal role in controlling its spread.
