“Jammu and Kashmir Encounter: The 90-Hour Standoff and Its Challenges”

Prolonged Jammu and Kashmir Encounter Raises Concerns Amid Uptick in Terrorist Activity

A prolonged encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district has entered its fourth day, highlighting the complexities faced by security forces when dealing with well-trained terrorists in challenging terrain. The encounter, which has been ongoing for over 90 hours, has raised concerns amidst an uptick in terrorist activity in the Pir Panjal region.

The encounter, which began in the Gadul forests of Kokernag in Anantnag, has resulted in the loss of three officers, including Colonel Manpreet Singh and Major Aashish Dhonchak of the 19 Rashtriya Rifles, and Deputy Superintendent Himayun Bhat of the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Additionally, one soldier is missing, and at least two more personnel have been injured during the operation.

The terrorists are believed to be hiding in a cave situated atop a hill, providing them with both protection and complete visibility of the actions of the joint Army and police team that surrounds them. The narrow path leading to the cave, devoid of cover and featuring a sheer drop on one side, proved perilous during the team’s initial offensive on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of three personnel.

Despite the use of drones, rocket launchers, and mortar shells, security forces have not achieved domination of the area. However, officials remain confident about neutralizing the terrorists at the earliest opportunity.

Of particular concern is that this encounter is one of three in Jammu and Kashmir within five days, coinciding with an increase in terrorist activity in the Pir Panjal region, covering the Poonch and Rajouri districts. Former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police SP Vaid noted that the Anantnag encounter signifies a change in strategy by terrorists and their backers in Pakistan.

The terrain and conditions in Gadul forests have added to the challenge faced by security forces. The path leading to the hilltop is treacherous, with steep terrain, dense forests, and a deep ditch on one side. This difficult terrain contributed to the vulnerability of the personnel during the initial ascent, which took place in darkness.

Sources have indicated that the terrorists are well-prepared, with sufficient stocks of arms, ammunition, and food, allowing them to sustain the encounter for an extended period. It is also suggested that the number of terrorists involved may be greater than initially reported.

The inclement weather, including heavy rain and a nearby fire, has further complicated the operation by reducing visibility and impeding drone operations.

Former DGP SP Vaid commented on the evolving tactics of terrorists, highlighting their avoidance of inhabited areas and preference for hiding in dense jungles and hilly regions. This change in strategy aims to draw out security forces, inflict harm, and provide opportunities for escape. Additionally, terrorists may seek to prolong encounters to attract international media attention.

Security forces are closely monitoring this evolving situation, adapting their strategies to counter the changing tactics of terrorists operating in the region.
