The Indian government has taken a decisive step in its ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and safeguard national security by extending the ban on Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu Kashmir (JeI) for an additional five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision on Tuesday, reaffirming the government’s commitment to zero tolerance against terrorism and separatism.
The ban extension comes in the wake of continued activities by JeI deemed detrimental to the security, integrity, and sovereignty of the nation. Originally declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ on February 28, 2019, shortly after the Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, JeI has remained under the government’s scrutiny. The decision to prolong the ban underscores the severity with which the government views any threat to national security.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), JeI has persistently engaged in promoting terrorism and anti-India propaganda, fueling secessionist sentiments in Jammu and Kashmir. The organization’s activities have been deemed prejudicial to India’s sovereignty, security, and integrity, prompting stringent action.
The MHA highlighted the numerous criminal cases registered against JeI and its members under various sections of the law, including the UAPA. This underscores the serious legal ramifications faced by those associated with the proscribed organization.
In a recent development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at 15 locations across Jammu and Kashmir as part of its crackdown on JeI in a terror funding case. The raids, conducted in Srinagar, Jammu, Budgam, Kulgam, and Anantnag, yielded significant findings, including incriminating documents, digital devices linked to JeI’s activities, and a substantial sum of money.
