Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, currently detained in Tihar Jail due to corruption charges, is set to meet Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on April 15th, following a second request that was granted by jail authorities. This meeting comes amid heightened political tensions and security concerns.
The decision for the meeting was finalized after officials from Tihar Jail, along with police representatives from Delhi and Punjab, discussed and arranged a suitable security protocol. The meeting is scheduled to take place at noon and will adhere to the jail’s standard guidelines.
Earlier attempts for a meeting between the two opposition leaders were denied due to security considerations. However, Kejriwal had submitted a list of six individuals, including Mann, for visitation rights after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with an alleged liquor policy scam.
Kejriwal’s detention stems from allegations related to the liquor policy scam, which has caused significant disruption within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) just weeks before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He was sent to judicial custody for two weeks, during which he has been receiving medical attention due to his diabetic condition.
The AAP has strongly defended Kejriwal, accusing the probe agencies of political targeting orchestrated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged Kejriwal’s direct involvement in the policy’s formation, leading to kickbacks that funded electoral campaigns.
Despite the controversies and legal battles, both Kejriwal and Mann have maintained a united front against the BJP’s allegations. Mann has previously stated that the BJP’s attempts, including using the ED, cannot suppress Kejriwal’s ideology, emphasizing AAP’s role in countering the ruling party’s influence.
The meeting in Tihar Jail between Kejriwal and Mann is expected to draw significant attention, especially regarding political strategies and alliances in the run-up to the upcoming elections.
