In the aftermath of a tragic accident in Pune, Maharashtra, where a 17-year-old crashed his Porsche into a bike, claiming the lives of two young professionals, a political storm has erupted. Allegations of a cover-up involving an MLA’s son and bribery scandals have embroiled the ruling BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP government and the opposition Congress.
The controversy intensified as Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole accused the state government of collusion between police, politicians, and influential individuals. Patole alleged that the son of an MLA was also involved in the accident, and efforts were made to manipulate evidence, including paying doctors at Sassoon Hospital to replace blood samples to conceal alcohol traces.
Demanding accountability, Patole called for the resignation of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar. He criticized the nexus between authorities and the affluent, highlighting the teenager’s privileged background as the son of a prominent Pune realtor.
While not naming the legislator directly, reports suggest involvement of Sunil Tingre, an NCP MLA, in visits to the police station where the teenager was held. Police admitted to protocol lapses, leading to suspensions within the force. The case has been transferred to the Pune Police Crime Branch, with calls for a CBI investigation.
In response, BJP spokesperson Asif Bhamla defended the government’s actions, emphasizing a crackdown on drink driving statewide. He dismissed accusations of political interference, stating that personal connections don’t imply undue influence. The BJP accused the opposition of politicizing the tragedy.
The accident occurred during early hours, violating legal driving and drinking ages. The teenager, now in remand, faces legal consequences along with his father. Arrests of hospital personnel for alleged tampering with evidence and bribery further underscore the complexity of the case.
