IMD Predicts Low-Pressure Area Over Arabian Sea, Warns of Possible Cyclonic Development

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather advisory predicting the formation of a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the coasts of North Karnataka and Goa, within the next 12 hours. The system is expected to move northward and could intensify into a depression in the subsequent 36 hours, raising concerns over potential cyclonic activity and unstable weather across parts of southern and central India.

According to the IMD, the low-pressure area is forming under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation that currently extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. This circulation is located over the east-central Arabian Sea as of 8:30 AM IST on May 21. Meteorologists suggest that the system shows signs of further intensification and could evolve into a cyclonic storm depending on atmospheric and oceanic conditions in the coming days.

The department also highlighted the formation of a trough extending from this cyclonic system to Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the lower tropospheric levels. This development could lead to unstable weather, including thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rainfall, in multiple regions of south and central India.

In addition to the developments over the Arabian Sea, the IMD observed another upper air cyclonic circulation at lower levels over Punjab and nearby areas. An east-west trough stretching to eastern Bangladesh, along with a circulation over central Assam, could contribute to increased rainfall and thunderstorms in India’s northeastern states.

Advisory for Fishermen

In light of the impending weather disturbances, the IMD has issued a warning to fishermen and advised them to avoid venturing into several coastal and maritime zones due to the likelihood of high winds and rough sea conditions.

The affected areas include:

  • East-central and southeast Arabian Sea
  • Coastal regions off Kerala, Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and adjoining southern Gujarat
  • Lakshadweep area

Fishing activities in these regions should be suspended from May 21 to May 26.

Additionally, fishermen have been advised to steer clear of:

  • The southwest Arabian Sea and the coast of Somalia
  • The Andhra Pradesh coast and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal from May 21 to May 26
  • The Andaman Sea on May 26

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and has urged regional authorities and the public to stay alert for updates and take necessary precautions.
