In a high-intensity operation, Arunachal Pradesh Police arrested a wanted drug trafficker after an exchange of fire in the capital region. The accused, identified as Rohit Basumatary, was apprehended near Hollongi on Saturday evening. The police seized 12 grams of heroin and a US-made sophisticated firearm with six live rounds from his possession.
Police Operation and Arrest
According to Capital Superintendent of Police (SP) Rohit Rajbir Singh, the police acted on intelligence inputs and attempted to stop a vehicle suspected to be carrying narcotics. However, the driver refused to comply and tried to flee.
A police team, led by SDPO Kengo Dirchi, chased and intercepted the vehicle, at which point Basumatary opened fire on the officers. In retaliation, police personnel returned fire while ensuring civilian safety. The accused was eventually overpowered and taken into custody.
Seizure and Injuries
A search of the vehicle, conducted in the presence of magistrates and independent witnesses, led to the discovery of:
- 12 grams of suspected heroin hidden in a green soapbox near a spare tyre.
- A sophisticated US-made firearm along with six live rounds of ammunition.
During the operation, two police officers sustained injuries, while Basumatary was taken to R K Mission Hospital for medical treatment.
Criminal Background and Investigation
Authorities revealed that Basumatary has a long history of criminal activities, including robbery, illegal arms possession, and drug trafficking across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
A case has been registered at Chimpu police station, and a special investigation team, led by Inspector Rina Sonam, has been assigned to further probe the case.
Police Urge Public Cooperation
SP Singh praised the officers for their restraint and professionalism in handling the situation. He also urged citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that the fight against drug abuse requires collective action.
