“Kharge Calls on Govt to Resolve Farmer Leader Dallewal’s Protest and Hunger Strike”

Kharge Urges Government to Address Farmer Leader Dallewal’s Protest Amid Health Concerns

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday called on the central government to take responsibility and end the indefinite hunger strike of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, urging authorities to find a solution to farmers’ demands.

Dallewal, 70, began his fast-unto-death on November 26 at the Punjab-Haryana Khanauri border to press for the legal recognition of the minimum support price (MSP) and broader agricultural reforms. His health has deteriorated significantly, prompting the Punjab government to establish a medical board to monitor his condition after he fainted on Thursday.

Kharge expressed grave concern over Dallewal’s health, highlighting the need for the government to fulfill its constitutional obligations.

Criticism of Government Policies

In a strongly worded post on X (formerly Twitter), Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the government’s “anti-farmer policies, stubbornness, and unfulfilled promises.”

“You must understand that because of your anti-farmer policies, stubbornness, and false promises, our farmers, who provide us food, are pleading for justice from your government. Farmers have self-respect because they feed the country,” Kharge wrote.

He added that measures such as lathi charges, tear gas, rubber bullets, and derogatory remarks like “agitator” and “parasite” would not resolve the farmers’ grievances.

Unmet Promises

Kharge also questioned the government’s inaction on promises made in November 2021 when Prime Minister Modi announced the repeal of the three controversial farm laws. The PM had pledged to establish a committee to address issues such as transparency in setting MSP.

“The whole country wants to know what happened to that promise. Do not forget that farmers are the backbone of the country, and betraying them is betraying the country,” Kharge said.

Farmers’ Protest

The farmers’ protest, which began in February, continues under the banners of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. The protesters demand legal guarantees for MSP and other reforms to safeguard their livelihoods.

The ongoing agitation reflects broader frustrations among farmers over agricultural policies and perceived government indifference. Dallewal’s hunger strike has intensified calls for meaningful dialogue and action to address these pressing issues.

As concerns over Dallewal’s health grow, the central government faces increasing pressure to engage with the protesting farmers and provide a resolution.
