IndiGo Flight Executes Go-Around During Stormy Chennai Landing Attempt Amid Cyclone Fengal

A dramatic video capturing an IndiGo aircraft’s attempt to land in Chennai amidst Cyclone Fengal’s strong winds and heavy rains has gone viral, showcasing the challenges faced during adverse weather conditions. The Mumbai-Chennai flight, operating as flight 6E 683, made an initial attempt to land but was forced to execute a go-around due to safety concerns.

The footage shows the aircraft nearing touchdown before suddenly aborting, tilting significantly to the left, and ascending back into the stormy skies. IndiGo confirmed the incident, emphasizing that the maneuver was a standard safety protocol.

IndiGo’s Statement

In an official statement, IndiGo explained, “Due to adverse weather conditions, including rain and strong, gusty winds (which later led to the closure of Chennai airport), the cockpit crew executed a go-around on November 30, 2024, in accordance with established safety protocols.”

The airline assured that go-arounds are standard procedures designed to ensure passenger safety. “Our pilots are extensively trained to handle such situations with the utmost professionalism. A go-around is performed when a safe landing cannot be achieved,” IndiGo added.

Despite the challenging conditions, the flight successfully landed at 12:40 pm, shortly before Chennai airport suspended operations due to the cyclone.

Cyclone Fengal’s Impact

Cyclone Fengal made landfall late on November 30, unleashing torrential rains and fierce winds across northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The cyclone led to severe waterlogging in Chennai, causing significant disruptions. Tragically, at least three people lost their lives in rain-related incidents.

The storm’s effects prompted authorities to close Chennai airport temporarily, prioritizing safety. As the region grapples with the aftermath of the cyclone, rescue and relief operations are underway to address the damage caused by the intense weather.
