Delhi and its neighboring areas are on high alert as the recent outbreak of violence in Haryana’s Nuh has reached the affluent areas of Gurugram. In response to the escalating situation, Gurugram authorities have imposed prohibitory orders and banned the sale of loose petrol or diesel, which has been used by rioters to start fires.
The violence erupted during a religious procession in Nuh, located just 50 kilometers from the capital city, Delhi. The incident was allegedly triggered by an objectionable video that went viral, leading to a mob attack on the procession with stones. Seeking refuge, the 2,500-plus participants rushed into a temple, which further escalated tensions.
As the evening progressed, the situation worsened, with a mosque being torched post-midnight, and mobs going on a rampage in both Nuh and neighboring Gurugram, leading to the destruction of over a hundred vehicles and several shops and shanties near a residential society.
In response to the unrest, Delhi has tightened security measures and deployed drones to monitor sensitive areas. Authorities are urging citizens not to believe rumors and to refrain from giving credence to unverified reports on social media, which might further exacerbate the situation.
In the wake of the violence, right-wing organizations, including Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal, are conducting protest marches in various parts of Delhi to condemn the events in Haryana. These protests have resulted in traffic jams in multiple areas.
Videos on social media have emerged showing Bajrang Dal supporters reciting Hanuman Chalisa near the Nirman Vihar Metro Station, and attempting to block Vikas Marg, though they were later removed by the police.
The Supreme Court has also intervened, urging Delhi authorities to deploy heavy force and install CCTVs in key areas to prevent any further escalation of violence.
The clashes have led to the deaths of at least six people, including two police personnel. Questions have been raised about the role of social media posts in fueling the unrest and alleged inaction on the part of the authorities during the crisis.
In response to the escalating violence, a Special Investigation Team has been set up to probe the cases of communal violence and the role of Monu Manesar, a member of Bajrang Dal.
Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has expressed his suspicion of a “conspiracy” behind the clashes, labeling the incident as “unfortunate.” According to him, certain individuals orchestrated an attack on the yatra participants and the police, which subsequently resulted in violence at multiple locations.
As the situation remains tense, authorities are working diligently to restore peace and stability in the affected regions. The focus now lies on investigating the root causes of the violence and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice to prevent any further escalation of tensions.
