Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to chair a crucial meeting on Monday evening to assess the security situation in Manipur. This meeting marks the first significant gathering by the central government after the recent re-election of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
According to sources familiar with the development, senior officials from the Centre, state governments, including Chief Minister N Biren Singh, representatives from the army, and other security forces are expected to attend the meeting scheduled for 4 pm.
Manipur has been grappling with serious clashes between the Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3 last year. These clashes have resulted in the loss of at least 225 lives and displaced around 50,000 individuals, many of whom are still residing in relief centres.
Recent weeks have witnessed a surge in violence, including the burning of a school building near Moreh and the discovery of a beheaded body of a missing person. Additionally, armed militants ambushed the convoy of Chief Minister N Biren Singh’s advanced security team in Kangpokpi district, resulting in injuries to a civilian driver and a security officer.
The situation has garnered attention at the national level, with RSS chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat emphasizing the urgency to prioritize peace in Manipur. He called for moving beyond election rhetoric and focusing on resolving the issues facing the nation.
RSS General Secretary Dattatreya Hosabale described the ongoing violence in Manipur as “painful” and “worrisome,” stressing the importance of dialogue and fostering a peaceful environment.
