Abdullah Azam Khan Penalised ₹3.71 Crore for Misrepresenting Land in Stamp Duty Case

Abdullah Azam Khan, son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, has been hit with a penalty of nearly ₹3.71 crore in a stamp duty evasion case related to land deals dating back to 2022.

The Rampur District Magistrate’s court on Tuesday ruled that Abdullah Azam misrepresented residential plots as agricultural land while registering four sale deeds in the Sadar tehsil area. This alleged misrepresentation led to stamp duty evasion of around ₹1.78 crore, said Prem Kishor Pandey, district government counsel.

Following a probe conducted by the SDM Sadar, three separate cases were filed in the DM court, and Abdullah Azam was issued notices in February last year. After hearings from both sides, the court found stamp duty irregularities in all four transactions.

“One sale deed in Madhiya Nadar Bagh had already been decided earlier, resulting in a penalty of ₹9.22 lakh,” Pandey said. “The latest order pertains to the remaining three properties located in Benjeerpur Ghatampur—one of which carries a fine of about ₹1.01 crore, while the other two have penalties of around ₹33.80 lakh each.”

The total penalty amount includes double the evaded stamp duty, along with a 1.5% monthly interest for the delay in payment.

According to officials, Abdullah Azam allegedly registered the land using agricultural rates to significantly lower the stamp duty, even though the plots are situated in residential areas. The evasion was uncovered during a reassessment of the land using residential rates.

Abdullah Azam has been given a month to respond to the court’s order. Authorities stated that further action will be based on whether the penalty amount is paid or challenged.
