IMD Issues Rain Alert for Karnataka Till June 17, Bengaluru Among Districts to Witness Heavy Showers

After a brief lull, the southwest monsoon has returned with intensity across Karnataka, bringing widespread rainfall and strong winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day weather alert across multiple districts in the state, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds until June 17.

In Bengaluru Urban and Rural, along with Ballari, Chikkaballapura, Mandya, Ramanagara, Tumakuru, Mysuru, Davangere, Hassan, and Vijayanagar, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by wind speeds of 40–50 kmph at isolated places. Moderate rain is also expected across Chamarajanagar, Chitradurga, and Kolar districts during this period.

The alert is part of a broader forecast that covers all regions of Karnataka:

  • In south interior Karnataka, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely, with gusts reaching 50–60 kmph, particularly in Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu, which may experience extremely heavy rain at isolated locations.
  • The coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy downpours, with wind speeds ranging from 30–40 kmph. Some areas may witness extremely heavy rainfall.
  • In north interior Karnataka, districts such as Belagavi, Dharwad, and Gadag are forecast to receive extremely heavy rain and wind speeds up to 60 kmph. Other districts like Koppal, Haveri, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, and Raichur will likely see heavy rainfall, while Bidar and Yadgir may experience moderate showers.

The effects of the monsoon’s revival are already visible. Hubballi, in Dharwad district, recorded torrential rainfall early Thursday, causing severe waterlogging, particularly in Hanashi village.

The IMD anticipates that rainfall across south interior Karnataka will remain fairly widespread until June 14, after which it will intensify and spread more broadly. In coastal and north interior regions, the rains are expected to stay widespread through June 17.

Authorities are advising residents in the affected districts to stay alert, especially in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as the intensity of rain is expected to increase in the coming days.
