Heavy Rain Triggers Waterlogging and Uprooted Trees in Bengaluru; Yellow Alert Issued for Several Districts

Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms lashed Bengaluru on Saturday night, leaving several low-lying areas inundated and causing widespread disruption across the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the city received approximately 40 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

Sai Layout was among the worst-hit areas, witnessing severe waterlogging that led to significant property damage. Household belongings in flooded homes were drenched, electronic items were ruined, and several vehicles were partially submerged. Residents in the affected neighborhoods were forced to move to nearby safer locations.

In addition to flooding, tree branches came crashing down in multiple parts of the state capital, further complicating the situation. The sudden downpour exposed the city’s inadequate drainage system, with residents blaming clogged drains and alleging that repeated complaints to the authorities had gone unheeded.

Meanwhile, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Karnataka, including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Belagavi, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, and Shivamogga. According to the department’s bulletin released on Sunday, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 30-40 km/h are likely to occur at isolated places over the next three hours.

The weather department has also warned of potential temporary power outages, traffic snarls, and the risk of weak trees being uprooted. Citizens in the alert-affected districts have been advised to stay indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

While the Malnad region and coastal Karnataka have also been receiving consistent rainfall, urban centers like Bengaluru continue to struggle with the consequences of poor drainage planning and unprepared civic infrastructure.
