In the aftermath of a religious procession that spiraled into communal clashes in Nuh, Haryana, the unrest has now spread to Gurugram, 50 kilometers away. A mob, reportedly around 200 strong, armed with sticks and stones, entered the area and unleashed chaos, vandalizing shops and setting fire to an eatery, all amid religious chants. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries in the recent incident.
The initial violence erupted during the religious procession in Nuh, a mere 50 kilometers from Delhi. The clashes ensued following the circulation of an objectionable video, which many believe sparked tensions among the participants. As the mob attacked the procession with stones, over 2,500 people rushed into a nearby temple for safety.
However, the situation escalated as the evening wore on. During the night, a mosque was set on fire, and more than a hundred vehicles were torched and vandalized as mobs went on a rampage in both Nuh and neighboring Gurugram. Among the casualties were two security personnel and two civilians, including a mosque cleric. Thankfully, those who had sought refuge in the temple were rescued close to midnight.
In response to the violence, the administration has taken action, registering 44 FIRs so far and making over 70 arrests related to the unrest. Reports suggest that the turmoil began due to rumors surrounding Monu Manesar, a Bajrang Dal activist wanted in connection with the murder of two men from Bharatpur earlier in the year. Monu Manesar had allegedly called for people to join the religious procession in a video, claiming that he would also be present. Moreover, his associates had delivered provocative speeches prior to the rally.
Chaudhary Aftab, the MLA from Nuh, expressed his concerns about the deteriorating atmosphere and the potential for violence. He revealed that he had warned the administration against granting permission for the procession, but his pleas were not heeded. He attributed the incident to Monu Manesar’s statements and actions.
The repercussions of the clashes are being felt across Gurugram. All educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and coaching centers, remained closed for the day. The board exams for Classes 10 and 12 were postponed as a result. Additionally, tomorrow, educational institutions in Gurgaon’s Sohna sub-division will remain closed as authorities work to restore calm.
In response to the escalating situation, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has promised “strict action” against the perpetrators. He expressed his sadness over the incident and urged citizens to maintain peace. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed concern, describing the communal violence in Nuh as “deeply troubling” and appealing for peace.
As authorities investigate the incident and work to bring those responsible to justice, the region remains on edge. The recent clashes serve as a stark reminder of the need to address and prevent communal tensions and underscore the importance of maintaining harmony and unity within the society.
