In the wake of relentless rainfall and swelling river levels across Uttar Pradesh, the state has witnessed a tragic toll with 54 lives lost in rain-related incidents over the past 24 hours. Reports from the relief commissioner’s office reveal a grim scenario affecting more than 18 lakh residents across 923 villages, marking one of the most severe flooding episodes in recent times.
According to official sources, lightning strikes claimed the lives of 43 individuals across 10 districts, with Pratapgarh bearing the highest casualties at 14, followed by Sultanpur with 7. Additionally, drowning incidents accounted for 9 deaths in four districts, while snake bites resulted in 2 fatalities in separate incidents in Amethi and Sonbhadra districts.
The flood’s impact has been widespread, affecting districts such as Gonda, Balrampur, Shravasti, Kushinagar, and Pilibhit among others. In Lakhimpur Kheri alone, 1,79,293 people from 250 villages have been severely affected by the rising waters, with similar distress reported in other regions.
Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) flood units are underway in six districts to evacuate stranded villagers and provide essential relief. As river levels continue to rise dangerously above their respective danger marks in several areas including Shahjahanpur, Barabanki, Gorakhpur, and Siddharthnagar, authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to mitigate further damage.
With vast swathes of agricultural land submerged and thousands displaced from their homes, the situation remains critical. The state government, along with local administrations, is mobilizing resources to support those affected and restore normalcy amidst the ongoing crisis.
