Three days after a tragic hit-and-run incident involving a BMW in Mumbai’s Worli area, Mihir Shah, the alleged driver, remains elusive as police intensify their search efforts. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman and left her husband injured. Shah, son of politician Rajesh Shah from Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, is believed to be hiding along with family members, including his mother and sister, as per police sources.
The details emerging from the investigation paint a disturbing picture. Shah, reportedly intoxicated after spending nearly ₹20,000 at a Juhu bar, allegedly took control of a BMW driven by Rajrishi Bidawat. CCTV footage suggests Shah was driving when the vehicle collided with a two-wheeler at around 5:30 am, dragging Kaveri Nakhwa for 1.5 kilometers before stopping. Shockingly, the footage also indicates that Shah later reversed the car to run over the victim’s body once more before fleeing the scene.
Following the incident, Shah purportedly swapped seats with Bidawat, who initially claimed to have been driving. Bidawat, under orders from Rajesh Shah, allegedly collaborated in concealing the crime, including removing a Shiv Sena sticker from the car and attempting to hide it at Kalanagar. Both Rajesh Shah and Bidawat were apprehended by Worli Police, with Rajesh Shah being released on bail after a brief period of custody.
The case has drawn comparisons to previous incidents of influential families attempting to manipulate legal proceedings, such as the infamous Pune Porsche hit-and-run case. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde condemned such abuse of power, asserting that no one, regardless of their social or political stature, would be immune from justice under his administration.
“We are committed to ensuring that those responsible for such heinous crimes are brought to justice,” Chief Minister Shinde stated. The police have formed multiple task forces to locate Mihir Shah and have been interrogating associates, but Shah and several family members have reportedly turned off their mobile phones, complicating the search efforts.
