The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the tragic incident at a firecracker factory in Harda, Madhya Pradesh, issuing a notice to the state government demanding a response within four weeks. The blast, which occurred on Tuesday, resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left around 200 others injured.
The NHRC’s notice was prompted by media reports highlighting the alleged lack of action by authorities, despite prior knowledge of inadequate fire safety measures and a history of similar incidents at the factory. The commission has directed the chief secretary and the director general of police (DGP) of Madhya Pradesh to furnish a detailed report on the matter within the stipulated timeframe.
In its directive, the NHRC emphasized the importance of including various aspects in the report, such as the status of the first information report (FIR), updates on the health and medical treatment provided to the blast victims and their families, and actions taken against negligent officials. Additionally, the commission sought information on measures implemented to prevent the recurrence of such tragic incidents.
Despite four days having passed since the incident, the rescue operation continues as four workers remain missing amidst efforts to clear the debris. Harda divisional commissioner Pawan Sharma confirmed that while the rescue operation has concluded, efforts to clear the rubble are ongoing to ensure no one is left trapped underneath.
However, protests have erupted in Harda over the disposal of twine bombs seized from other factories belonging to the accused Rajesh Agrawal and Somesh Agrawal. These bombs were discovered in an irrigation canal in the Sirali area of Harda, sparking concerns among locals.
The NHRC’s intervention underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for swift action to address the lapses in safety protocols and accountability in the aftermath of the tragic incident. As authorities grapple with the aftermath of the firecracker factory explosion, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the imperative to prioritize and enforce stringent safety measures in hazardous workplaces to prevent loss of life and property.
