Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has rejected Arvind Kejriwal’s plea for an extension of his interim bail on medical grounds. As a result, the Chief Minister of Delhi will remain in Tihar Jail, with his judicial custody extended until June 19.
Arvind Kejriwal had been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court on May 10, allowing him to stay out of jail until June 1, coinciding with the final phase of voting for the Lok Sabha polls. However, his legal team sought further bail till July, post-election and government formation, which the court will consider at a later date.
On Sunday, Kejriwal surrendered himself to Tihar jail authorities after visiting various locations in Delhi, including Rajghat and the Hanuman Mandir. His return to jail marked the end of his interim bail period, which had seen controversy over his medical needs. Kejriwal and his party had accused authorities of withholding his medication, while the Enforcement Directorate countered these claims, stating that the food provided from his home was inappropriate for diabetics.
Despite seeking an extension on health grounds, Kejriwal did not receive any further relief from the court. In response, he emphasized his commitment to the country’s welfare, drawing parallels to historical figures like Bhagat Singh.
The decision underscores the ongoing legal and political challenges faced by Kejriwal, as well as the broader issues surrounding health care and prison conditions in India.
