A police constable was killed and four others, including a fellow officer and an accused under custody, sustained serious injuries after their police vehicle was struck by a speeding unidentified vehicle on the Gogunda-Pindwara highway in Rajasthan’s Khakhri village early Thursday morning.
The tragic incident occurred as a team from Bhilwara district’s Begun police station was returning from Gujarat with an accused in custody. According to Gogunda Police Station in-charge Probeshner Madhav Upadhyay, the unidentified vehicle hit the police car with significant force, causing it to crash into a highway divider and become lodged in a roadside culvert.
Constable Killed on the Spot
Police constable Devnarayan Gurjar of Begun police station was killed instantly in the crash. The deceased officer’s body has been moved to the mortuary at Gogunda hospital for post-mortem examination.
The other injured include Assistant Sub-Inspector Basilaal, Constable Sunil, driver Balwant Jat, and the accused being transported, Alfaz Mansuri. All sustained serious injuries and were immediately rushed to the Udaipur district hospital with the help of local villagers, highway patrol, and emergency services.
Driver Fled the Scene
The driver of the unidentified vehicle fled the scene after the collision, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to track down and apprehend the hit-and-run driver.
“This was a high-impact crash. The vehicle carrying our officers and the accused was severely damaged,” said officer Upadhyay, adding that teams have been deployed to examine CCTV footage and gather witness statements from the nearby area.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have launched a full investigation into the accident, treating it as a case of culpable homicide and negligent driving. Authorities have also reached out to nearby toll plazas and transport checkpoints to trace the fleeing vehicle.
This incident has brought renewed attention to the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel while on duty and the growing threat of reckless driving on national highways.
