Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma Enters Politics, to Contest Lok Sabha Election from Pithapuram

In a surprising turn of events, acclaimed filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has announced his foray into politics, revealing his decision to contest the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Andhra Pradesh. Varma declared his candidacy for the Pithapuram constituency in the state, setting the stage for an intriguing electoral battle.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Ram Gopal Varma shared his unexpected decision, stating, “Sudden decision. Am happy to inform that I am contesting from Pithapuram.” The filmmaker, known for his unconventional approach to cinema, did not divulge further details regarding his political aspirations.

Varma’s announcement follows closely on the heels of the Telugu Desam Party-Bharatiya Janata Party-Jana Sena Party (JSP) alliance’s declaration that Tollywood actor and JSP chief Pawan Kalyan would be the alliance’s candidate from the Pithapuram seat. This sets the stage for a potentially riveting electoral showdown between Varma and Kalyan.

The filmmaker’s decision to enter politics comes amidst controversy surrounding his recent film “Vyooham,” which delves into the political landscape of Andhra Pradesh, particularly focusing on the circumstances surrounding the demise of former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy. The film, featuring Manasa Radhakrishnan, Ajmal Ameer, and Surabhi Prabhavathi, sparked heated debates and garnered attention from local leaders.

Last year, Varma faced backlash from several quarters, with demands for his expulsion from the state, following the release of “Vyooham.” The filmmaker found himself embroiled in disputes with prominent political figures, including TDP supremo Nara Chandrababu Naidu, TDP leader Nara Lokesh, and actor-politician Pawan Kalyan, over the content and portrayal in his political drama.

Varma’s entry into the political arena adds a new dimension to the electoral landscape in Andhra Pradesh, with his unconventional persona and penchant for controversy promising to inject an element of unpredictability into the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. As the countdown to the polls begins, all eyes will be on Pithapuram to witness the unfolding of this intriguing political saga.
