Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate India’s inaugural underwater metro tunnel in Kolkata tomorrow, marking a significant milestone in the country’s urban transportation landscape.
The Kolkata Metro extension, which includes the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade Metro section, features India’s first transportation tunnel to traverse beneath a major river. This achievement underscores the nation’s progress in infrastructure development and its commitment to enhancing urban connectivity.
The inauguration ceremony will not only celebrate the completion of the underwater metro but also include the unveiling of other crucial metro and rapid transit projects across the country. Among these projects are the Kavi Subhash – Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro section and the Taratala – Majerhat Metro section, both integral parts of the Joka-Esplanade line.
The Majerhat Metro Station, located within the latter section, stands out as an architectural marvel with its innovative design spanning railway lines, platforms, and a canal. This station exemplifies the innovative approach adopted to improve urban mobility in Kolkata.
In addition to Kolkata, the Prime Minister will also inaugurate key projects in Pune, Kochi, Agra, and Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor. These projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion, provide seamless connectivity, and stimulate economic growth.
For instance, the Agra Metro’s newly inaugurated stretch from Taj East Gate to Mankameshwar promises improved access to the city’s historical sites, while the Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor aims to boost economic activity within the National Capital Region.
Moreover, the foundation stone will be laid for the extension of the Pune Metro Rail project phase 1, further expanding urban transit infrastructure.
This comprehensive initiative reflects the government’s commitment to developing sustainable and efficient transportation networks nationwide. By revolutionizing commuting experiences, reducing environmental impact, and fostering economic growth through enhanced connectivity, these projects are poised to transform India’s urban landscape.
