Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a crucial meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security on Thursday to address the alarming rise in terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir. The meeting, attended by Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, comes in the wake of recent deadly incidents and ongoing security operations in the region.
Just hours before the meeting, two soldiers were injured in an encounter in J&K’s Doda district, where security forces have been engaged in a prolonged operation against terrorists linked to the killing of four Army personnel earlier this week.
This heightened security situation follows a series of attacks targeting security personnel and civilians across Jammu and Kashmir. Last month, PM Modi chaired a review meeting to assess the region’s security status, receiving updates from Home Minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on counter-terrorism operations.
Jammu and Kashmir Police have intensified their efforts against increased terrorist activities, resulting in multiple arrests of individuals suspected of aiding terrorists. Large-scale search operations are being conducted by paramilitary and army troops based on intelligence inputs. The region has witnessed a significant escalation in violence, with 48 Army personnel, including officers, killed in action over the past 32 months.
Recent incidents include a coordinated terror strike in Kathua, where five soldiers lost their lives in an attack involving armour-piercing bullets on military transport trucks. In another tragic incident last month, nine civilians were killed and several others injured when terrorists attacked a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi, causing it to plunge into a gorge.
The surge in terrorist activities, initially concentrated in areas like Poonch and Rajouri, has now spread across Jammu, a region that was relatively free from terrorism until recent years.
