PM Modi Calls for Global Framework on AI Ethics at GPAI Summit Inauguration

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged global leaders and industry participants to exercise caution and prioritize safety while navigating the promising yet sensitive realm of artificial intelligence (AI). Addressing the inauguration of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit, Modi emphasized the imperative need for a transparent and responsible approach to AI development to prevent potential abuses like deepfakes, data theft, and terrorist exploitation.

Modi advocated for a comprehensive global framework governing AI technologies, stressing the importance of making AI systems transparent, free from biases, and trustworthy. He underscored the transformational potential of AI but emphasized the necessity to ensure it benefits all segments of society without leaving anyone behind.

The inaugural event, attended by dignitaries including Hiroshi Yoshida, the Japanese Minister for Policy Coordination, saw discussions centering around the responsible evolution of AI. Notably, India assumed the Chair of GPAI for the year 2024, leading a forum consisting of 28 nations and the European Union.

Highlighting the urgency, Modi called for expedited formulation and enactment of a global AI framework, urging a swift conclusion within the current year. He likened this framework’s necessity to international treaties, emphasizing the need to act promptly and collaboratively on this global movement of AI.

Modi urged for inclusive AI development, emphasizing the significance of participation from the Global South to ensure equitable results. He stressed the integration of human and democratic values into AI development to mitigate potential exacerbation of existing inequalities.

During the summit, Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and junior IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar reiterated AI’s potential applications in agriculture, personalized education, healthcare, and policymaking, aiming for an equitable and inclusive approach.

The Prime Minister also underscored leveraging AI to bridge linguistic diversity in India, discussing the possibility of AI revitalizing dormant languages and aiding in areas such as Vedic mathematics. He emphasized leveraging extensive governmental data for evidence-based policy formulation.

Amidst discussions, Modi addressed concerns regarding deepfakes, cybersecurity threats, and AI tools’ potential misuse by terrorist groups, calling for a collective effort to prevent their misuse and ensure global security.

Modi’s call for standardizing AI model testing before public deployment and exploring methods to increase AI-generated information’s credibility reflects a pivotal step towards establishing ethical and regulated AI development practices on a global scale.

The GPAI Summit marked a significant step in fostering global dialogue and collaboration on AI ethics, echoing the growing importance of AI in shaping the future while underscoring the necessity for responsible, transparent, and ethical AI development.
