Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged stringent measures against crimes targeting women following widespread protests over the rape and murder of a junior doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Addressing a gathering at the ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, PM Modi emphasized that crimes against women are “unforgivable” and assured that no perpetrators would be spared, regardless of their status.
“The safety of women is a paramount concern. I want to reiterate to every state government that crimes against women are intolerable,” Modi stated. His comments come amid intense outrage and a political clash between West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress and BJP leaders, who have sparred over the state’s handling of women’s safety issues.
The ‘Lakhpati Didi Sammelan’ celebrates members of self-help groups who have achieved an annual household income of ₹1 lakh or more. Modi highlighted his government’s achievements in improving financial support for women, noting that loans provided to women’s self-help groups have surged from under ₹25,000 crore before 2014 to ₹9 lakh crore in the past decade.
Modi also expressed support for Maharashtra’s BJP-led Mahayuti government, urging voters to maintain stability and foster prosperity in the state. He positioned Maharashtra as a key player in India’s development, emphasizing the importance of continued investment and job creation for its future growth.
